Each year aesthetic associations and global wellness institutions release data trends based on the prior year. These stats tell us which procedures are trending and which ones are losing steam. A cosmetic surgeon who deals with patients day in and out sees these trends in their daily practice and can often see how they are panning out ahead of the data. Culturally we also see how wellness trends are affecting which procedures patients ultimately select and how they are choosing to care for themselves in the long run. This often can affect whom and why they choose the doctor they want to work with as well. With 2017 in full swing, here is a forecast of some of the trends that will gain momentum as the health and wellness paradigm evolves for the future.

Plastic Surgery Continues to Boom!

Plastic surgery is expected to be the biggest emerging market by 2020 according to a report from Persistence Market Research. Europe and North America will dominate the global cosmetic surgery market. This is due to the growing aging population and a general acceptance of aesthetic procedures. Doctors who have practiced cosmetic surgery for many years have witnessed significant paradigm changes, noting a significant shift toward non-invasive procedures and patients looking for a quick fix of their necks, chests, hands, elbows, and more. Up Next…Designer Fillers.

This year we have already seen the introduction of even more targeted products (niche fillers) such as Restylane Refyne and Defyne, which are designed specifically to improve smile lines while maintaining expressions in the face, and lasting over a year. Other new products such as Juvederm Volbella, aim at lip enhancement and Juvederm Vollure for mid-face lifts that can tar.get specific concerns more effectively than ever before. Additionally, there are now three approved neuro-modulators on the market – Botox Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin --and there are more in the pipeline. Many of these newer products are rumored to last seven to eight months.

Mommy Makeovers.

Breast lifts, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and a combined surgery of these procedures (often referred to as the mommy makeover) continue to grow. Abdominoplasty is up 87% since the year 2000. The post-bariatric population is growing as well. As people become more fit and aware of their overall health, this procedure will continue to skyrocket. The Neck. The neck is still

The Neck. The neck is still

The neck is still slightly unchartered territory and we will continue to see new and improved products. Kybella, the newest Allergan product for double chins, is just the tip of the iceberg. These fat-melting injections may also have a role in treating other stubborn pockets of fat such as bra-line rolls, above the knee fat and more. Also promising is a topical treatment for localized fat treatment. Topokine latanoprost, a topical agent acquired by Allergan, is the real deal. Phase three studies and pivotal trials will be necessary to achieve approval, but if they confirm the results of early studies, this will be a first-in-class topical agent that can reduce localized fat.
